This report doesn't specifically state the reason behind the growth in the number of businesses with employees in Alberta is so high.
On a year-over-year basis, the number of businesses with employees in Alberta in the fourth quarter of 2006 was 5.8% higher than in the same quarter of 2005, the largest gain among the provinces. It was followed by British Columbia (+4.5%) and Ontario (+3.1%). Via StatsCan
Oil is a big part of Alberta's economic growth but I would be really interested to see what type of businesses are adding employees - I bet they are service based businesses.
