Every so often I get asked about how I manage time. A great metaphor for time is to pretend time is like a unique savings account.
At the beginning of each day I am given 24 hours to spend anyway I wish. Each day an accountant comes along and empties my account of any unused, wasted or squandered time!
I believe time is a human invention and despite the fact a human invented it, I have not figured out how to master it, yet. However, I think managing time has less to do with managing time and more to do with getting clear about what is important to me -- then making sure whatever I do is in alignment with my purpose, goals and objectives.
Four Steps To Help You Chase Your Passion
- Step 1 - Determine the target (goal)! Knowing what you are aiming for is the first step in the journey. If you do not know where you are going, any road will take you there! Take the time to clearly establish what you want more of in your life.
- Step 2 - Determine your purpose (why)! Purpose is about getting clear about what you want to experience more of in your life, as a result of directing your energy around a practical idea. In other words, defining an internal focus of what the target is going to be!
- Step 3 - Create specific objectives (what)! Creating clear objectives means having external goals that are independent of your personal feelings and emotions. These objectives then become reliable indicators of your progress if you monitor your progress.
- Step 4 - Create a success road map (how)! Next, you need a blueprint for success! A road map which points out the direction, landmarks, milestones and tasks that will need to be accomplished along the way if you are to succeed. This road map will allow you to observe your progress and decide, while enroute, if any course corrections are required.
Finally, you must be willing to live with tension -- tension between where you want to be (objective) and where you are now (reality). Tension is created as a natural by-product of growing aggressively. Remember, tension by its nature, seeks resolution. Do not resist tension; resistance will only prevent you from getting what you want. Be creative, make tension your friend! This means you must be willing to keep your current reality clearly in sight, and convert any doubts and limiting emotions into momentum by focusing on your purpose (why), objectives (how) and the road map.
