Do you blog as a hobby or to promote your business?

Do you blog as a hobby or to promote your business?
When I first started writinglinks online I wrote to record what I was learning, attract visitors interested in small business topics, and build business relationships. Once in awhile someone would contact me and inquire if I could help them write a business plan or some other business challenge.

I was thinking about a comment from a client:
"The people who come to my blog are looking for something for free and therefore not prospects for my services or products."

This statement by my client caused me to question whether writing value added articles and posting them on my blog where they are available for anyone is a legitimate marketing strategy.

What do you think, are the people who visit your blog prospects? Do blog visitors buy your products or services?

I am very interested in hearing about your experiences.
